The Storm Warriors 2 TV SPOT

fter the dismal debut of Bangkok Dangerous, the Pang Brothers have returned to China for their next film - The Storm Warriors. This is latest their exploration into martial arts - not that they haven't already featured martial arts in their films, but this is a period epic. For those who have forgotten who the Pang Brothers are, they're a directing team out of Hong Kong who brought us the original The Eye in 2002, The Messengers in 2007, a remake of their own film Bangkok Dangerous in 2008, and a handful of other Chinese features. And if you're hesitant about watching this trailer, don't be, it kicks some serious ass.

This reminds me a bit of Kazuaki Kiriya's Goemon, but not as stylized as that. I'd love to check this out, I think it just looks like some badass martial arts fun, despite being from the Pang Brothers.

The original cast returns in a sequel to Lau Wai-keung's 1998 The Storm Riders. Wind (Ekin Cheng) and Cloud (Aaron Kwok) find themselves up against a ruthless Japanese warlord intent on invading China.

The Storm Warriors is directed by Hong Kong brothers Oxide and Danny Pang, of the original The Eye, The Tesseract, Re-cycle, The Messengers, and Bangkok Dangerous previously. The screenplay was written by Wing-Shing Ma, who wrote the comic book that the original Storm Riders is based on as well as other comic books like A Man Called Hero. The Storm Warriors is only scheduled to hit theaters in China starting in December of 2009. This film doesn't have a US distributor yet, but we hope to hear more on it soon!

Avatar Footage at Comic-Con

Website Dorkshelf is running an exclusive claiming they have it from a “reliable” (though uncredited) source that footage from James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi epic Avatar will be screened at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. And not only will the Avatar footage be shown, according to Dorkshelf, but preparations are being made to show it in full “photorealistic” 3D, just as Cameron intended!

Rumor is that the Avatar footage will be screened during the film’s hour-long Comic-Con panel on July 23rd, which will feature appearances from Avatar stars Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, as well as Cameron himself. The location of the panel will be the H hall at the San Diego Convention Center, which is allegedly being converted into a 3D movie theater for the event.

If this news pans out, I know where I’ll be the moment that panel starts: in a prime seat with my 3D glasses in hand.

Bloggers around the ’sphere have all been speculating that there would be a sneak peek at Avatar during Comic-Con this year - especially when Comic-Con banners featuring Avatar started appearing in and around San Diego last week. It certainly would be prudent for Fox and Cameron to make a HUGE splash at Comic-Con, as Avatar has had little to no exposure to anybody but we, the movie-geek nation.

However, I suspect that whenever this photorealistic 3D technology starts wowing crowds, word about Avatar will spread overnight.

Avatar hits theaters on December 18, 2009. Comic-Con will take place on July 23-26, 2009.

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince HBO First Look

With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen out of the way, it’s now time to focus on that other big movie of summer 2009, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Sure to be an absolute box-office smash, the sixth film in the Harry Potter series is fast approaching with not long to go before we can all take our seats in the theater to enjoy the magic-filled world once again.

To give us a taste of the new Harry Potter movie a little ahead of its release, HBO has an extended, beyond-the-standard-trailers look at the film in a featurette that reveals brand new footage and interviews with the cast and crew.

The HBO First Look video is in two parts, and lasts just over 12 minutes, but if you’re at all looking forward to the next installment in the series, I highly recommend giving the full thing a watch. Check out the videos below:

Harry Potter is a franchise that I think has gotten better as the series progressed. With the exception of the third, the Prisoner of Azkaban (which I thought was the best of them so far), they have been getting darker, more mature and more entertaining as the series’ actors and stories have matured. I didn’t think it was possible for Harry Potter to go any darker than the Order of the Phoenix was, but all that we’ve seen from the Half-Blood Prince so far has proven that it can.

I’m certainly not the biggest Harry Potter fan in the world (I haven’t read any of the books), but I find myself really looking forward to this installment.

Indiana Jones 5 To Be in 2011?

While the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise may have failed to scratch the adventure itch for most film fans, it was hugely profitable at the box office, making $786 million around the world. In Hollywood terms that sort of money means follow-up, and as we recently told you a story is in development for a fifth film in the Harrison Ford-starring franchise.

The Insider is reporting (via Slash Film) that a new Indiana Jones film will be going into production soon and could hit screens by 2011 - when Harrison Ford is on the cusp of turning 70!

Now while The Insider uses an unknown/unnamed (and therefore unreliable) source for the story, the release date mentioned does gel with the kind of time frame it would take to mount a big budget action film. However, having said that, it took George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford twenty years to agree on and develop the script for The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, so two years might be be a bit of an optimistic hope.

Last month Shia LaBeouf talked about the development of the film saying :

“Steven just said that he cracked the story on it before I left and I think they’re gearing that up.”

So it does appear that Indy 5 is moving along on Spielberg’s backburner. With LaBeouf hotter than ever after Transformers 2 and Spielberg with a full directing slate it might be difficult to schedule. Ford’s not currently attached to any other films having shot comedy Morning Glory and the as yet untitled Crowley film.

The main problem with Indy 5 (apart from scheduling issues) is that Harrison Ford isn’t getting any younger and as he approaches 70, making an Indiana Jones film might be difficult (although Ford was in damn good shape for a man even half his age in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

What do you guys think - make Indy 5 or just leave it alone?

Twilight Spinoffs After Twilight Sequels

With New Moon wrapping up production and its rushed release set for this November and with Eclipse beginning production next month, which will open next summer, AND with Breaking Dawn coming quickly after that, what happens next?

The four (finished) books of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga will have all been translated to the big screen. All will be rushed out within the next two years with nothing left to go on. That is of course, assuming Meyer doesn’t hurry up and finish that fifth book, Midnight Sun, which she stopped working on after an incomplete draft of it leaked online.

However, that book is just the first one all over again from the perspective of Edward as opposed to Bella so it may not be too much new - it’s more of a companion novel. What if fans want more?

Well, the one thing holding Summit Entertainment back is the lack of more books to translate to the silver screen. Or is it?

It now seems that the possibility of spinoffs is very real and come the end of the four current movies, we could be seeing more milkage of the cash cow coming our way in the form of entirely original screenplays based on the world set up by Meyer.

In a brief interview with Radar Online at the 36th Annual Vision Awards in Beverly Hills this weekend, Twilight producers Wyck Godfrey and Greg Mooradian revealed that they are entirely open to the idea of spinoffs after the main four films have been completed:

“Stay tuned. I think if our movies do as well as the first did all possibilities are out there. But right now we need to finish what we have and finish Stephenie’s vision as best we can and then let’s see where the audience demands us to go from there.”

If the movies do well, which is not unexpected, there’s no doubt that they’ll want to cash in on the built-in fanbase’s desire for more. As we start seeing the sequels roll out, there will likely be aspects of the world and/or characters that become stand-out fan favorites and that would be ripe for the making of a spinoff movie(s) to extend the franchise. We’re living in the age of franchise extensions through sequels and remakes so this is not out of the realm of possibility.

The films have a relatively low budget and are being made in mere months. Despite this being very evident in the trailer for New Moon, the movie should make a ton similar (or more) than Twilight did last fall so there’s no reason to stop assuming the sequels perform well.

One idea proposed during the interview is that of a movie centered in on the Volturi vampire guild, which is led by Aro, played by the incredibly talented Michael Sheen. That guy can lead any film in my mind and I can see a movie moving forward on that angle involving the many new characters we’ll be introduced to this Fall in The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

In the novels, the Volturi rule the vampire world and play a major part in New Moon but not so much in Eclipse (could be slightly different in the film). Some other members of the Volturi include Jane, Heidi, Marcus and Caius who are being played by Dakota Fanning, Noot Seear, Christopher Heyerdahl and Jamie Campbell Bower respectively.

Do Twilighters want more films that extend past Stephenie Meyer’s work? If so, in what should they be about?

The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens this November 20, 2009 and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is scheduled to release early next summer on June 30, 2009. Expect Breaking Dawn not long after.

Transformers 2 raced to $300 in 14 Days

* Biggest Wednesday opening of all time.

Harry Potter 6 Looks To Beat Transformers 2 in Ticket Sales

Source: Fandango

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, opens next week on Wednesday, July 15, but the film already represents 61% of daily ticket sales on Fandango.

Advance ticket sales for the new Potter movie are outpacing advance sales for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and the fifth Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, at the same point in those films' sales cycles (eight days before release date).

"Harry continues to be 'The Chosen One', especially among movie fans," says Rick Butler, Chief Operating Officer for Fandango. "'The Half-Blood Prince' is turning out to be one of our fastest-selling titles of the year, and has consistently been a top-seller ever since tickets went on sale on June 17."

Harry Potter: What to Expect from Deathly Hallows

Today, at the New York press conference for Warner Bros' anticipated Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the cast and crew talked about the final chapter in the long-running series based on J.K. Rowling's novels, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which has been divided into two separate films. (If you haven't read the book yet, you might want to turn away as to avoid spoilers before even seeing the sixth film.)

Director David Yates and the cast are about five months into shooting the two halves of the film, scheduled for November 19, 2010 and July 15, 2011, and he mentioned that they would have very different looks even though he's using the same crew. He told ComingSoon.net in an exclusive interview after the press conference that they've shot roughly 85% of Part 1 and 10% of Part 2, the latter due to the availability of the actors.

Earlier, Yates gave an idea about what the feel will be for the two parts of the final movie, which should be very different from Half-Blood Prince or anything that came before. "The first movie is a road movie basically, and it's quite intense and very raw and we're way away from Hogwarts, and it's a bit like three refugees being pursued across the landscape by these terrible Death Eaters. We're really enjoying it actually. It feels very different. What's hard about coming back to 'Half-Blood Prince' is we finished it about a year ago or less. It's weird coming back. The first one is very verité and documentary and edgy and on the road, and the second part is a big opera basically, a great big epic with huge battles and very oddly moving, because it concludes the whole saga really. So they're two very different films."

Producer David Heyman is still remaining deliberately coy about where the split between the two parts will happen, possibly because it still might change. "It's been an interesting process because actually, when we began, all of us didn't want to make two films. Why do it now? It was not something that was told to us that we had to do. It was just an organic process of working on it and Steve working on it. The films really took a fundamental turn when Steve working with Alfonso Cuaron made the decision to tell the story from Harry Potter's point of view, as opposed to translating the books to film. At that point, there were sort of necessary omissions along the way so something that we loved, for example something like SPEW, which is Hermione's interest in the house elves, we love that but it is omitted because it wasn't part of Harry's story. It allowed us to create a cinematic structure for the films rather than literally translating the books"

"The seventh book is a long book," he continued, "but it's a book in which there is almost nothing that isn't related to Harry and almost nothing that you could cut out so Steve working away in the vacuum of his house was struggling in some ways to figure out what to cut out. Together, all of us made the decision—obviously the studio were rather happy with that decision, let's not kid ourselves—but we made the decision to make two films. And Steve called me the other day and said, 'I think we can do three…" Only just joking of course, but actually, I think there's so much material in the seventh book that making two films was the very best thing we could have done to adapt it in the right way. In terms of where we're breaking it, we'd like to hold that back for a bit and actually we made a decision right now but because we're shooting both films as one in a way, we're shooting them together, we'll see what happens ultimately. The film is written in a very specific way and I'm sure that'll be where we end up but I don't want to say now and all of a sudden go 'Hm….'. Is that fair?"

"Absolutely fair," Yates agreed. "We do have an endpoint but we'll kind of figure it out when we start editing I think."

"'I'm so excited about the seventh film," Daniel Radcliffe told the sea of journalists earlier. "I don't know if anybody else had the same experience as me over the last couple of days, but seeing the sixth film again, it does suddenly strike me that we are doing something very, very different with the 7th film."

"It's not very often that in the middle of the filmmaking process, you stop yourself and go 'This is going to be awesome' and I've done that on a number of occasions," Emma Watson confirmed. "We've just done this amazing scene in the forest where we're getting chased by the Snatchers, and I've never done anything like it, nothing even close. I've never really done any serious stunts or any real action, and it's so exciting and just really dynamic. Because all of us are now finished with school and we're all just totally focused on this finale. It's out of Hogwarts, it's just about the three of us. It's going to be… well, I hope it's going to be brilliant and it feels totally different. I feel like I'm on a different film. The other films have this structure: You know, we come into the Great Hall and there's the opening talk and that's just gone, it's gone."

Deathly Hallows, the book, ends with a flash-forward nineteen years to the young characters in the future, and the creators were asked how they thought they were going to accomplish that and whether it would involve the existing actors or older ones that looked like them. "We're still exploring how we're going to deal with that," Heyman responded, to which Yates added, "It's an absolutely beautiful part of the book and one of the most unique things of this franchise I guess is the fact that you've grown up with these characters. I think it's what makes it special for the audience, so we'll be delivering that at the end of Part 7 Part 2, but we're looking at various options of how we do it. We still haven't quite figured it out yet. Probably not 'Benjamin Button' technology. We did look into that, but we don't think it's the route we're going to take.

"A lot of 'Benjamin Button' was making them younger and we're taking people who are 20 years old and making them look like they're in their late 30s, so that's a different experience," Heyman confirmed. "We may use some of (it) but we're still in an exploratory stage. We're going to do everything we can and it will be Dan, Rupert and Emma in those parts, not some other actors."

Watson also mentioned that her and Rupert Grint have already filmed their big kissing scene two weeks ago. "It was not something we were really looking forward to," said Grint. "It was quite a strenuous day to have to go in and think about doing, but I think it was alright in the end."

"Yeah," Watson agreed. "David doesn't really let us watch playback but he let us watch playback under the circumstance because I think Rupert and I were quite nervous that it might look ingenuous, as we were so desperate to get it over with. I think Rupert and I felt the pressure of this kiss, and (for) the fans, this is like ten years worth of tension, hormones and chemistry and everything in one moment and we had to ace it, so it was like 'Oh God' but hopefully we did it."

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opens on Wednesday, July 15. We'll have more from Mr. Yates next week, including him telling us about blowing up Hogwarts… and possibly even a good portion of Leavesden Studios in the process!

A deadly virus has spread across the globe. Contagion is everywhere, no one is safe, and no one can be trusted. Four young attractive people race through the back roads of the American West to the pounding beat of a vacation soundtrack. Their aim is to retreat to a secluded Utopian beach in the Gulf of Mexico, where they could peacefully wait out the pandemic and survive the apocalyptic disease. Carriers follow their getaway through a surreal and dangerous world where laws and rules no longer apply.

Their plans take a grim turn when their car breaks down on an isolated road, starting a chain of events that will seal the fate of each of them in an inexorable and horrifying voyage of hell through a western landscape populated by only the hideous dead or the twisted living. Their desperate retreat south turns into a deadly battle against infected children, homicidal doctors, crazed survivalists, rabid dogs, and finally, each other. The virus is the least of their problems as horrible choices must be made in the face of lost humanity.
