Transformers Sequel Blows Up the Box Office!

Going into the weekend, there was no doubt Michael Bay's anticipated sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, would be huge, though few thought it could open as big as last summer's biggest blockbuster, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, at least not based on the awful reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. After grossing just over $60 million on Wednesday (a record for the weekday opening) and another $29 million on Thursday, the sequel brought in an estimated $112 million over the weekend for a total of $201.2 million in its first five days. Besides setting a record for a June opening, surpassing 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Bay's latest grossed the second-largest amount over a five-day period after The Dark Knight's $203.8 million. The IMAX Corporation reports that the movie had the best five-day gross, grossing $14.4 million in its first five days on 169 IMAX screens, nearly double what the 5th "Harry Potter" movie did two years ago. "Revenge of the Fallen" became the third-largest worldwide opening weekend grosser, earning $274 million and beating out last summer's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The film has become Paramount's biggest international opener of all time, again besting "Indy 4" for the top honor, and ranking as the industry's fourth-biggest opening of all time abroad. The sequel has taken in $387 million worldwide to date.

The Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds rom-com The Proposal (Disney/Touchstone) dropped to second place, off 45% from its opening weekend with $18.5 million and a ten-day total of $69 million. Todd Phillips' hit comedy The Hangover (Warner Bros.) dropped to third place with $17.2 million and a total gross of $183 million, making it the third-highest grossing R-rated comedy. It has the breakout R-rated comedy Wedding Crashers in its sights and will pass it sometime in the next few weeks.

With roughly $13 million grossed over the weekend, Disney•Pixar's animated-adventure Up became the top grossing movie of 2009, surpassing J.J. Abrams' Star Trek with a total gross of $250 million after five weeks. It's currently the fourth-highest grossing movie for Pixar Animation, although it should move into second place behind Finding Nemo sometime next month.

Offered as counter-programming to Bay's latest explosion-filled epic was Nick (The Notebook) Cassavetes' adaptation of Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper (New Line/WB) starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin, which opened with an estimated $12 million in 2,606 theaters, averaging $4,616 per location.

The Sony comedy Year One, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, tanked in its second weekend, dropping 70% to sixth place with $5.8 million and a ten-day total of $32.2 million. Sony's other summer offering, Tony Scott's The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, took seventh place with $5.4 million and a total of $53.4 million, compared to its reported production budget of $100 million.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (Paramount) took eighth place with $3.6 million, bringing its total to $246 million, while Ben Stiller's comedy sequel Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (20th Century Fox) dropped to ninth place with $3.5 million and a total gross of $163 million.

Sam Mendes' road comedy Away We Go, starring Jon Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, expanded into 495 theaters, allowing it to break into the Top 10 with $1.7 million and a four-week total of $4 million.

The Top 10 grossed almost $193 million, making it the top grossing three-day weekend for 2009, up 9% from this weekend last year when Pixar's WALL•E and Timur Bekmambetov's Wanted dominated with $113 million between them.

Opening in limited release was Stephen Frears' period comedy Chéri, reteaming him with Michelle Pfeiffer for the first time since Dangerous Liaisons, and it grossed $408 thousand in 76 theaters, averaging roughly $5 thousand per venue. Kathryn Bigelow's bomb-squad thriller The Hurt Locker (Summit) opened in four theaters in New York and L.A. where it grossed $144 thousand, or $36k per site.

Public Enemies Featurette

Release Date: July 1, 2009
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Michael Mann
Screenwriter: Ronan Bennett, Michael Mann, Ann Biderman, Mark St. Germain
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, Billy Crudup, Stephen Dorff, Rory Cochrane, Stephen Lang, David Wenham, Stephen Graham, Channing Tatum, Jason Clarke
Genre: Action, Thriller
Plot Summary: In the action-thriller "Public Enemies," acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillinger's gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw's capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America's first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing "Clark Gable of the FBI."

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis' men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous "Lady in Red" to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

Alice in Wonderland (2010) First Look

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first promotional photos from Tim Burton’s 3D re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland. Above you can see the first official photos of Johnny Depp as a freakish-looking Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen (”Off With Their Heads”), and Anne Hathaway as The White Queen, looking very pale. After the jump we’ve included newly confirmed details about the film’s plot (did you know its a kind of a sequel?) and new concept art that shows the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen) and more.

The USA Today article (where the images premiered) confirms our previous report that the movie is actually a sequel in some ways. The film begins at a party where Alice, now 17, finds out that she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty high society types. She makes a run for it, and of course, ends up following a white rabbit down a hole, back to Wonderland — a place where she visited a decade prior. The White Rabbit is convinced that he has the right girl but Alice doesn’t remember her past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them, but will she? Can she?

Other details revealed in the article include: The Red Queen has “a moat filled with bobbing noggins”, The White Queen is beautiful but eccentric, and floats around instead of walking, and that Depp employs an accent for the Hatter that producer Richard Zanuck can only describe as “indescribable”.

I’ve seen most of this art before at previous Disney industry events, and as I’ve stated in the past, I’m loving the Burton-styled look. I know some people will complain that this film looks too dark, but I actually wish some of it was darker. I’m not sure what to think about Depp of Carter’s digitally enhanced appearances. It will be interesting to see what they look like in motion.
Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland will hit theaters on March 5th 2010.

First Avatar Footage Shown

Even though places like THR and IESB are saying that the audience at the Expo was asked to sign non-disclosure agreements, reports are nonetheless coming in from various different sources about the Avatar footage that was shown. And below we have provided a selection of quotes from them.

Coming Soon (scooper: ‘The Insider’)

I’ve just returned from a preview screening of “Avatar”… and I’m still feeling the after effects of this jaw-dropping experience… Finally a director who doesn’t feel the need to stick it [3D] in the audience’s face with cheap tricks like pointing objects at the camera…

I thought–just like you guys–that I’ve seen it all with Gollum, or The Hulk, but Cameron has done it again. These creatures seem so real, that within minutes you forget you’re watching an enormous and very blue CGI character. Even the eyes are totally convincing. The characters have real personalities and a soul… The effects are in a league of their own. After some disappointing or even pointless 3-D movies, “Avatar” maybe the first movie where 3-D is properly utilized.

MarketSaw

You will NOT believe the detail… The world outside is amazing. It all lives, breathes and works… You will not believe the amount of leaves that look like someone created that jungle for real.

What is most important about this movie [is that] everything lives and breathes… There’s a shot of leaves somewhere which is so photorealistic you don’t want to think it’s CGI. You believe this world from the get-go. It’s there, you don’t need to believe it because you will experience it.

Unique Cinema System (via Twitter)

“…Stunning, literally jawdropping. Amazing visuals unlike any before seen, with incredible detail… CGI was photorealistic, characters look really real. Believe the hype, this movie will be massive!”

Well there you have it - the first real solid information and early reactions to the sci-fi special effects-filled blockbuster that is Avatar. I don’t think the word “hype” even covers it anymore, the buzz has gotten so big. What’s encouraging about these early reactions is that they’re coming from people who are not in any way involved with the making of the film (read: not biased). Even if they seem almost too good to be true, it’s still great to see that the word “disappointment” has yet to be used, something which the mega-hype suggested was inevitable.

Weaving Not Quite Back Yet for Hobbit

Last Friday, director Guillermo del Toro announced on BBC Radio 5's Simon Mayo that Hugo Weaving will reunite with Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen in The Hobbit "...as the roles they originated in the trilogy."

Weaving told Moviehole today that he's interested in returning as Elrond, but that he hasn't been spoken to yet.

"I knew that if and when it happened I'd get a call and we'd chat about it, but I haven't spoken to anyone about it. Someone said to me 'I hear you're doing the Hobbit?' I said 'Well, um, probably', they said "No, no. you've signed on'. I haven't actually talked to anyone about it. Doesn't mean I won't be doing it, [I'm] just not onboard yet."

The first of the two films is scheduled to be released in December of 2011 followed by the second in December of 2012.

Mission: Impossible 4 in 2011

We recently reported that director JJ Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek) and Tom Cruise have signed on to produce the fourth "Mission: Impossible" movie. Variety has now confirmed the news, adding that Paramount Pictures is aiming to release the film in 2011.

The return of Cruise to Paramount is surprising in view of the circumstances surrounding his departure in August 2006. Apparently not happy with the size of Cruise's deal, among other issues, Viacom chief Sumner Redstone abruptly terminated the 14-year relationship between the star and the studio.

The rift led to Cruise becoming the chief of United Artists and taking a more active role in production decisions. Redstone, meanwhile, has sought to heal the relationship. At a recent appearance, he described the star as "a great actor and a good friend."

Transformers 2 Facts and Figures!

Only 7 days to go! Michael Bay has posted a fun little update on his own blog with facts and figures from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. What does this mean? Well, read on and find out! Essentially, he lists facts and figures regarding the technical or digital side, including how much diskspace was required to store everything at ILM or how long it took to render certain frames of the movie. Not only is it crazy just to see how much bigger and better they made this movie, but it sheds some light onto how incredible ILM is. Keep on reading for some of my favorite facts

Robots:
» 14 robots last time, 46 robots this time (ILM only).
» Devastator’s hand is traveling 390 miles per hour when he punches the pyramid.
» All robot parts laid out end to end would stretch from one side of California to the other, about 180 miles.

Disk space:
» TF1 took 20 Terabytes of disk space. TF2 took 145 Terabytes. Seven times bigger!
» 145 terabytes would fill 35,000 DVDs. Stacked one on top of the other without storage cases, they would be 145 feet tall.

Rendering times:
» If you rendered the entire movie on a modern home PC, you would have had to start the renders 16,000 years ago (when cave paintings like the Hall of Bulls were being made) to finish for this year’s premiere!
» A single IMAX shot in the movie (df250) would have taken almost 3 years to render on a top of the line home PC running nonstop.
» IMAX frame render times: As high as 72 hours per frame!

IMAX:
» Optimus Prime will be life size on IMAX screens in many forest fight shots.
» IMAX frames take about 6 times longer than anamorphic to render.

Devastator:
» Devastator is as tall as a 10 story building.
» Devastator has more than 10 times the number of individual parts found in an average car.

Don't forget that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has at least three full scenes shot in IMAX!

Producer Frank Marshall's On Jurrassic Park IV & More

While filming continues on M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, Marshall is actively moving forward with another major movie franchise, as they're developing a fourth movie starring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, although a lot of elements still need to come into place. "We'd like to shoot next year," he told us. "It's trying to get everybody's schedules in the right place and getting the script right. We've done pretty well with these scripts that are pretty loosely put together, but I'd like the script to be really solid this time before we go forward. We're spending a lot of time on this story."

At one point, there were some thoughts that Damon might take on the role of Lance Armstrong in the biopic about the celebrity cyclist which is moving forward at Columbia Pictures, but Marshall said they'd be looking for a new up 'n' coming actor to take on the role instead. "The book really only takes Lance up to the first tour, so he's only 21, and as much as Matt looks young, I'm not sure that he's going to be able to do it." He'll be going to Europe in July to spend some time with Lance before starting work on Peter Morgan's directorial debut The Special Relationship about the relationship between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, as played by Michael Sheen and Dennis Quaid. It's being produced by HBO Films, so it may just debut on the cable station rather than going the theatrical route.

We asked the producing vet whether the recent disappointing showing for Universal's Land of the Lost might hinder the development of a fourth "Jurassic Park" movie but he didn't seem worried about that, even though that movie isn't imminent. "I think 'Land of the Lost,' it was a comedy. We just have to see if they can come up with a story. We don't have a story."

It was also reported earlier this year that Kennedy/Marshall was in negotiations to produce a remake of The NeverEnding Story, and Marshall explained his interest in the project. "We love the book and we've always thought there was an opportunity (because) there were a lot of elements in the book that weren't in the movie. It's another one where we're still working on the rights and it's a huge thing to get it. Once we get it, we'll bring on a writer, but that's kind of off in the distance. But it's a great story."

"Talisman is percolating, too," he said about the proposed TV mini-series based on the Stephen King-Peter Straub novel, though he was concerned about the recent reports of certain studios not having development money.

Marshall and his production company have a new deal at Sony, so they're going through their old libraries looking for projects that have stalled out that might be worth revisiting, one of them being The Last of the Metrozoids, based on the New Yorker article about art historian Kirk Vanedoe and his decision to coach a football team before he died of cancer shortly afterwards. Kennedy/Marshall are also interested in developing a movie for Universal from Warren St. John's book "Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, An American Town" which came out of his New York Times article about a soccer team made up of immigrants living just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Jackson Rathbone Talks New Moon

Before trying to get more details about the sequel, we asked Rathbone to talk about the experience of making the first film before things got so crazy. "The first film, it was one of Summit's first films. I think it was actually the second film they produced, the first being 'Never Back Down.' It felt like a bigger budget indie film. We were all kind of making this movie together, and the way Catherine Hardwicke directs, it's really a fun vibe that was on set. It was a little stressful because as we kept filming, the press kept getting more of it and the fans kept being more into it. All these websites started popping up, and all these things. It was amazing. It was like, 'Oh, wow, this is going to be something else!' We started making this movie and people are already loving it and it's not even out yet. It has six months to come out and they're already lining up in the movie theaters. That was an experience in and of itself. I wasn't really prepared for it, but I was really thankful for it, because they're so supportive of what we do. As an actor, you need an audience."

He then talked about the major differences with the production on the sequel. "We have a bigger budget, we have a little more pressure to keep that feeling going, but the nice thing is that you're delving more into the story now with 'New Moon,'" he said. "As the films progress, you get deeper into the lore and they mythical world you're establishing with the werewolves and get more into what the werewolf society and legacy is. It keeps getting deeper."

We wondered if he noticed a big difference with the vibe on set having a new director with Chris Weitz replacing Hardwicke and with the added pressure of making a sequel to such a big hit. "Whenever we got back to film 'New Moon,' the first day I was back, all the cast was hanging out in Peter Facinelli's room and it was just like a family reunion. It was like we'd been away for a month; it didn't seem like a year. It was just really nice to kind of get back together and have that family environment. In terms of having a new director, nothing really changed too much. It was just a different subtle vibe, because the director manages the energy on set. It was great. We all wanted to come together and make another great piece of art for the fans. It's really about what they want to see, because they're the ones buying the tickets."

He did say that the recent trailer didn't show the entire scene of him getting thrown into the piano, but that he did get to do a lot more of his own stunts in the movie. "That's only the beginning of it. They didn't show the entire thing. It's gonna be a really action-packed movie."

Once he's done making both movies, Rathbone is also producing his first movie called Girlfriend, which will be directed by newcomer Justin Lerner, who has had a couple shorts at Sundance, as well as recording a new album with his band 100 Monkeys.

Megan Fox Thinks Robert Pattinson (Edward-New Moon) Is 'Pretty'

Perhaps being back on the singles scene has made "Transformers" star Megan Fox reconsider her feelings about "Twilight" heartthrob Robert Pattinson. There was a time when Fox said she wouldn't consider dating Pattinson, or Zac Efron for that matter, because in her opinion they are too young and too pretty.

"I mean, he's outrageously attractive, he's like a very pretty man," she told MTV UK when asked about the rumors that she and Pattinson were at one time romantically involved. "I've never been in a room with him, though, so those rumors aren't true. ... Although, you know every other girl on the planet wishes that it was, but I didn't have the opportunity so."

At the "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" premiere in Berlin, Fox did confirm that she'd broken up with former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star Brian Austin Green. "I'm currently what you would call single, I guess," she said, according to The Sun.

When asked who she has on her radar next, she said, "There is this Korean Justin Timberlake named Rain, and I'm really on his situation now. I'm trying to fix this up. I'm working hard."

Back in May, Fox, 23, told Elle magazine that the one reason she was interested in her ex was that he had the maturity she looks for in a man. "Boys in their 20s are a waste of time," she said. "They have nothing to offer conversationally. They're immature. I feel like I have a better shot with someone in his 30s."

Kristen Gets More Words of Wisdom From Joan Jett

Kristen Stewart spent more time with Joan Jett today as she continues to gather research for her role in The Runaways. It's gotta be a little intimidating to follow around the rocker herself, but maybe Kristen could use the distraction since she's apparently missing her Robert Pattinson fix. Rob's otherwise occupied with his own movie right now, but we're already looking forward to seeing how a few months of distance will affect their chemistry.

Whiteout Movie Trailer

At long last there’s a trailer for Whiteout, the adaptation of Greg Rucka’s Eisner Award winning comic book series. Starring Kate Beckinsale as US Marshall Carrie Stetko and featuring The Spirit’s Gabriel Macht, this is a murder mystery set in Antarctica. A mystery revolving around, as the trailer points out, the very first murder in Antarctica. This Dark Castle production was directed by Dominic Sena, previously of Swordfish and Gone in 60 Seconds disrepute… though having said all of that, I quite enjoyed this trailer. See it for yourself after the break.

Here’s the promo, interesting voice over and all:

Beckinsale seems to have been somewhat underused here I think. Don’t the trailer manufacturers think she has even a little bit of a lure to her? I thought she was at least 25% of the reason anybody watched the Underworld films (while scratching my head about the other 75%)

Back when Sena was the director of commericals and music videos (rather than car crash films that looked like commercials or music videos) he was part of the Propaganda Films roster alongside Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Simon West, Alex Proyas, Mark Romanek and many more. That’s one heck of a club.

The story takes place at and around the McMurdo station, as referenced in The Thing, Alien and Dark Star and heavily featured in Werner Herzog’s Encounters at the End of the World. Shall we just say that I’m not entirely convinced that Whiteout is going to maintain that beautiful cinematic pedigree?

The Whiteout comics series had a sequel, Whiteout: Melt that saw not only murder but mass murder come to Antarctica. At least there’s something in place if this first film is a smash - not to mention the long-promised third comics run, Whiteout: Thaw which is now rumoured to be set for a debut this autumn, sometime after the movie hits in September.

Star Trek 2 Update!

Speculation at one point was that Star Trek might not make enough money to warrant a sequel. Well those fears have been quashed with Star Trek pulling in $231 million domestically, making it the highest grossing film so far in 2009. It might be able to hold on to that title if it manages to fend off the upcoming Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen (doubtful). Either way, script writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kutzman are in the limelight because they co-wrote both movies.

Orci and Kutzman sat down recently with SciFiWire to discuss their thoughts on Star Trek’s success, where they might take the franchise down the road and what type of story the sequel might follow. Both writers act like they have their heads together and have the same thought for the franchise: DON’T LET IT SUCK! They seem to understand the fine line they are walking between all new original stories based in the Trek universe and the re-telling of old Trek stories to keep the original fan base happy.

There is nothing set in stone as far as they are concerned and they haven’t even started working on a script yet (unless you count agreeing to do another movie as working). Orci said during the interview:

“We’re going to start thinking about it any second now. But we’re still just having a mental sorbet before we jump back in. And, you know, just seeing all the reactions to the movie. We want to make sure we take it all in and really figure out what worked and what didn’t and proceed from there. But now that we have … an open canvas, … anything can happen.”

Orci and Kutzman appear to truly understand what it takes to keep a franchise running (in theory anyway). They appreciate how much better their version of Trek performed at the box office over its Trek predecessors and aren’t taking that lightly. They went for a broad market share demographic and by all accounts they reached it. The true test will be how they handle a sequel - and we’ll get a chance to check that out with later this month when Transformers 2 opens.

If the story for TF2 is better then TF1 then my hopes (and others I’m sure) will be high that Star Trek 2 will be as good as or better than Star Trek 1. But it all starts with the story and if they don’t pick the right one to tell in Star Trek 2 then the whole franchise will fail before it really ever gets started. I think Orci has a grasp of that concept though:

“[you] just can’t use old things willy-nilly,… there’s still an internal logic that has to be followed. … We could still cross some lines [if] we think, “Oh, we can do anything now.” And a savvy fan will go, “Well, technically, [you can't].”

Twilight Leads The Teen Choice Award Nominations

Fox has released the nominations for this year’s Teen Choice awards. I thought that’s what the MTV Movie Awards were for. Apparently there’s a second round of teens awarding movies to be had, and as you’d expect the nominations look a lot like the MTV nominations. At least these awards have the decency to call themselves what they are. The other big difference? They probably won’t have Bruno flying over the crowd in assless chaps.

LaBeouf Talks on Indiana Jones

In an interview with BBC News, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star Shia LaBeouf says that it looks like a follow-up to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is moving forward.

"Steven [Spielberg] just said that he cracked the story on it before I left and I think they're gearing that up," LaBeouf said. Last summer's blockbuster was made for about $185 million and earned $786.6 million worldwide. It was the second-highest earner of 2008, behind just The Dark Knight.

LaBeouf also briefly talked about the Wall Street sequel that teams him with director Oliver Stone and Michael Douglas. "'Money Never Sleeps' is, I think, the official title now," he said.

Russian Police Use Brad Pitt to Fight Speeding

A Russian newspaper reports that life-size cardboard cutouts of Brad Pitt dressed as a traffic cop have been placed by the most dangerous intersections in the city of Omsk.

It's the latest move by authorities in their endless battle against speeding. Traffic accidents in Russia are among the highest in Europe.

The campaign seems to be working. Omsk officials say accidents are down as star-struck drivers ease off the gas to gaze at the unusual image.

The paper quotes Dmitry Ziryanov, a local official who came up with the idea as saying Pitt is "kind of like a colleague for us."

New Moon -Bella -She Is Waiting Video Song

The beginning of New Moon, told in a very depressing manner. xD The idea was to show how conflicted Bella is at the breakup. The happy memories of their summer together, and the break up and the birthday scene specifically as a contrast to the happy times. The idea that Edward had told her only months ago that they would be an item 'forever' and then how that was all a lie (or so Bella thought). The flickers don't really represent anything, but you can pretend they imply confusion and irrationality. :)

Sony And Paramount Might Join Forces Together

The CEO of Gamco Investors, who owns shares of Viacom, said that Paramont and Sony might be talking about a possible merger within the next six to 12 months.

Forbes has more:

Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures could merge with Sony Pictures, Universal Studios or another movie studio amid a wave of consolidation in the industry over the next few months, veteran investor Mario Gabelli said in the latest issue of Barron's.

The chief executive of Gamco Investors Inc, who owns shares of Viacom ( VIA - news - people ), said he expects dealmaking among movie studios as they seek to cut costs.

'Today there are seven or eight motion-picture studios. A round of consolidation will occur in the next six to 12 months because of the costs of financing, prints and advertising, the benefits of globalization and such,' Gabelli said. 'We hear talk of something going on.'

Click HERE to read the rest.

Hmm...this is big news. I know it's just investor talk, but that same line of talking started well before the MGM/Sony merger talk was ever made public and everyone working at MGM (including me) were eventually laid off once the deal went through months and months later. Just because stuff like this is speculation doesn't mean talks aren't happening as we speak.

But what would we call the new studio? Sonymount? ParaSony? If Paramount and Universal merged would they be called Universal Mount? The possibilities are endless!

Thor Update!

Back in March, we reported that the folks behind Thor had narrowed their choices down to six. They included Josh Hartnett, Liam Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, Joel Kinnaman and Alexander Skarsgård.

Initially, many thought young Skarsgård (son of veteran actor Stellan Skarsgård) got the role as he was spotted having lunch with Branagh. To me and many others, this was a great choice. Of the six candidates mentioned above, Alexander is the tallest, oldest and the largest. He also hails from a Nordic country and has the natural hair and look.

Approximately a month later, it no longer seemed that SkarsgÃ¥rd was the shoe-in for the role. Interviews with the actor revealed that he was no longer being kept in the loop and he felt that he wasn’t going to be the chosen one.

This led to a quick change in online speculation of who’d play the role as two days later, reports of Charlie Hunnam being a lead contender for the role popped up on the news blogs. It was being reported that Hunnam had screen-tested for the part in costume and with a hammer.

So, who would it be? Would they announce Hunnam or Skarsgård for the role?

Nope.

Instead, we got another wrench in the situation as Branagh kicked off the start of May by stating that Tom Hiddleston, his co-star from the series Wallander, was in fact in the running as well. Branagh also confirmed that the Marvel film would start shooting in January. We therefore expected a decision pretty soon so whomever was chosen could prepare for the role and get into physical training for the part.
