Transformers 3 Will Not Be Written By Orci & Kurtzman

On Tuesday, word spread online that the writers for Transformers and its sequel Revenge of the Fallen, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, would not be writing the third installment in the franchise.

The information originated from the Don Murphy forums were Orci participates regularly and it was here where the writer revealed that he and his partner are done with Transformers.

“Time for fresh blood!” writes Orci. “The main reason we would move on is because we risk getting stale and comfortable. If you only sing one song for too long, you miss the opportunity to sing news songs. We’ll see.”

While I enjoyed Transformers upon second viewing (the first time all I came out with was thoughts of the negative parts), my personal belief is that the main weakness of Transformers was its screenplay and that so many of its problems would have been rectified by different writing decisions. For that reason, I am pleased that the story, characters and dialogue will be written by others the third time around.

I’m hoping for and expecting a better movie experience with Revenge of the Fallen but I am happy there will be new writers behind Transformers 3. Orci and Kurtzman have a real test this year with both Star Trek and Revenge of the Fallen having been written by them and debuting as Summer tentpole films - so we’ll get a real good look at their writing ability.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opens June 24, 2009.

Sam Raimi Controls Spider-Man 4

Did you like Spider-Man 3? I didn’t. Sadly, many fans of the Spider-Man franchise were let down by the third installment of the series but don’t fret! We just may get a return to form with Spider-Man 4.

In an interview with Empire for this May’s issue, Raimi openly talked about some of the problems with Spider-Man 3 and confirmed some rumors we all heard about two summers ago when the movie was released.

“They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually. But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn’t really have creative control, so to speak.”

There were rumblings that Raimi wasn’t allowed to truly do his own story and that producers forced him to include the popular Venom character as one of the villains in the story. When asked about that, Raimi responded:

“I don’t even want to comment on Venom, because I know he’s a great character and all the fans love him. I never want to say anything bad about a much-beloved character because usually it turns out that I’m the one that doesn’t understand what makes it great.”

It seems that the image above is more meaningful than at first glace…

More questions were thrown at the director about the issues surrounding Spider-Man 3 and the at-the-time Marvel head honcho Avi Arad’s rumored insistence on Venom’s inclusion, but Raimi responded professionally and didn’t name names or play the blame game in his answers.

“The best way for me to move forward on films, I realize…and this was a lesson I had to learn for myself…is that I’ve gotta be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film.”
It sounds promising that the next movie will return to the quality we’ve come to expect from the first two films in the franchise. I’m glad that Raimi is back in the captain’s chair (for real this time) and that Tobey will be back as Peter Parker. We also know that Raimi really wants Kirsten Dunst back as Mary Jane but no deal has been made on that front as of yet.

As for the villains of the next Spidey film; we know Raimi has an interest in Morbius and they’ve spent quite a bit of effort in developing The Lizard. So, we could be seeing those two in the story. I like those choices as villains as they go hand in hand as a pairing in the Spider-Man comics and both have very similar origins.

I definitely prefer that pairing to the recently rumored (originating from a fan site) Electro and Carnage combo which I think would be a poor decision. They need to avoid Carnage if they want to keep the suspension of belief and have a more realistic (as realistic as it can be for a superhero flick) movie experience.

Or at least, save Carnage for the fifth film.

Spider-Man 4 is set to open in theaters May 6, 2011.

TIME Watches Footage From Cameron's Avatar

TIME magazine has published a new article talking about upcoming 3-D movie projects and the writer of the piece, Josh Quittner, got a chance to see footage from James Cameron's highly-anticipated Avatar, which 20th Century Fox will release on December 18. The sci-fi action-adventure stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald.

Here are a few excerpts from the article:

More than a thousand people have worked on it, at a cost in excess of $200 million, and it represents digital filmmaking's bleeding edge. Cameron wrote the treatment for it in 1995 as a way to push his digital-production company to its limits. The movie pioneers two unrelated technologies--e-motion capture, which uses images from tiny cameras rigged to actors' heads to replicate their expressions, and digital 3-D.

The film is set in the future, and most of the action takes place on a mythical planet, Pandora. The actors work in an empty studio; Pandora's lush jungle-aquatic environment is computer-generated in New Zealand by Jackson's special-effects company, Weta Digital, and added later.

I couldn't tell what was real and what was animated--even knowing that the 9-ft.-tall blue, dappled dude couldn't possibly be real. The scenes were so startling and absorbing that the following morning, I had the peculiar sensation of wanting to return there, as if Pandora were real.

Hopefully we'll get to see some footage from the film soon as well!
Avatar is set to released December 18, 2009

‘The Expendables’ Movie Gets A Spring Release Date

The Expendables train has been chugging full steam ahead ever since it was first announced. We’ve had plenty of casting news which has left us with a group (a group that, perhaps, may still grow) of some kick-ass icons of action movies past and present.

In addition to Sylvester Stallone (who’s also writing and directing the film), we have Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Randy Couture, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Arnold Schwarzenegger (if only in a cameo appearance) Eric Roberts and Danny Trejo. While adding some Oscar-winning power and beauty to the film is Forest Whitaker and Charisma Carpenter, respectively.

Now with all this news coming out about the film, one thing which you would understandably want to know is just when is it coming out? Well the wait is finally over.

The Expendables has a release date of April 23rd 2010.

Any movie even remotely similar to what The Expendables is (that is an all-out, kick-ass macho action-fest…. hopefully, anyway), doesn’t want to be released anywhere near that date. The only competition currently scheduled is the remake of Death at a Funeral with Chris Rock, but somehow I don’t think they have the same intended audiences.

Anyone who’s ever felt their blood pumping while watching Stallone training for the boxing ring, cheered as Jet Li kicks the asses of an everlasting array of bad guys, been hooked as Jason Statham stylishly fights a dozen guys at once while wearing a suit (on and on…), should be just drooling in anticipation of this thing right now.

Although the date they’ve set is about 3 months too late for my liking, it’s still great to see them choose a definitive date. If, for whatever reason, the date gets changed at any point, I hope it will be moved ahead and not pushed back.

So are you part of the intended audience for The Expendables? Is there anyone out there who’s going to be able to resist seeing this cast come together and kick ass?

The Expendables is set to start shooting this July and, as stated above, has a current release date of April 23rd 2010.

Natalie Portman Set To Star In Thor?

Along with Nikki Finke’s list of potential candidates for Thor, she also had a small blip about Natalie Portman in the lead for a female role.

The actress, whose career begun with films like Léon: The Professional and the Star Wars Prequels, might have a role in Thor? That just upped the ante for this project.

Portman, who I want to speculate is a fangirl in secret, brings a level of acting chops and big-name status to Thor that was much needed. Along with the aforementioned prequels, she’s also played the role of Evey in V for Vendetta, bringing out the humility in the masked anarchist.

Since the Norse God is seen as a secondary (maybe even third tier) character like Iron Man was, Portman in a lead role gives this movie the credibility it deserves. So the question is… who will she play?

There are a number of female characters in Thor’s story arc; some friendly and others–not so much. And since this is the first mention of any female character in the film, a breakdown of the potential roles and plot lines might be helpful.

Women in Thor’s circle of acquaintances range from vulnerable mortals to Asgardian Warrior Goddess and, of course, the ultimate femme fatale.

The first protagonist candidate is the character Sif, who’s an Asgardian warrior and Thor’s lover. As a child, she’s a sort of playmate for Thor and Loki. Although she is forgotten when she leaves to gain extensive training in combat, Thor’s Father (Odin) deems her a fitting mate for his son. Possessing immorality as a goddess, she prefers the world of Gods over the mortal world of Earth.

But on Earth, Donald Blake (Thor’s alter ego) has employed a nurse by the name of Jane Foster. She eventually develops feelings not only for the doctor, but also for the God of Thunder. A love triangle develops but ends when Thor reveals his secret identity and takes her to Asgard. Everything would be happily-ever after, if only Odin didn’t detest mortal-god relationships.

Then there’s The Enchantress (Amora). Born into the Asgardian gods, she’s booted but becomes one of the most powerful magic-wielders–her powers are focused on swindling and controlling people. She uses her sorcery and other “talents” to bend mortals and gods to her will. Sometimes succeeding in swaying Thor, she’s mainly an antagonist on both Asgard and Earth. Throughout her history, she teams with a number of characters against Thor–namely, Loki, Skurge (Executioner) and Power Man.

There is another smaller character, by the name of Brunnhilde/Valkyrie. Her aliases consist of Barbara Denton and Samantha Parrington, but the bodies play host to Brunnhilde on Earth. Her first appearance was in The Avengers, Vol. 1 but worth mentioning is her appearance in the Ultimates Universe, she develops a live-in relationship with Thor. Valkyrie has a superhero fetish and no real powers, until she’s granted super strength and a limited invulnerability by an unexplained source.

Portman can play just about any of these roles, but if I was forced to guess, I’d say Sif–but I wouldn’t doubt her as Jane Foster or Valkyrie and her performance in The Other Boleyn Girl is example enough to be the conniving Enchantress.

Thor is now expected to hit theaters June 17, 2011.

Transformers 3 Coming in July 2011

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have set a July 1, 2011 release date for Transformers 3, but the studios have cautioned to Variety that the dating of the third installment isn't an official announcement that the project is going forward; rather that the studios wanted to plan a stake in the date.

Transformers opened July 2, 2007; Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen debuts on June 24, 2009.

So far, Transformers 3 has no direct competition in its July 1, 2011 date.

Paramount also has moved up the release of Marvel Studios' Thor from June 17, 2011 to May 20, 2011. This move sets the release for Thor just two weeks after Spider-Man 4 opens on May 6, 2011.

Sam Raimi Wants Kirsten Dunst

It was just a few days ago when the official release date for Spider-Man 4 was announced along with the updated schedule for the next four films by Marvel Studios. Now, we have confirmation that a fifth movie is not currently being planned and therefore Spider-Man 4 & 5 are likely not to be shot at the same time as was rumored to be a possibility last May.
As for major players involved with this project, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are signed on but Kirsten Dunst is not. When asked if they could write her out or write in another love interest, Raimi responded

“I can’t imagine making a ‘Spider-Man’ movie without Kirsten,” he said, seemingly contemplating the idea in his head with a long pause. “Of course it can be done because Spider Man has existed without the character of Mary-Jane but she’s one of my favorite parts and it would be a shame not to have her in the picture. I’m hoping she’ll be in it and I’m planning on having a story with her in it.”

I can go either way on this as I wasn’t a big fan of her character in the films

What do you think about Spider-Man 4 and its potential villain line-up?

Matt Damon Confirms Bourne 4

The Bourne trilogy is one of hell of a kick ass set of films, with each film getting progressively more intense and exciting. The character of Jason Bourne is pretty much the blueprint for modern action men (yes, even more than Bond) and will go down in cinematic history as such.

But with The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass (who helmed the second and third, but not the first), star Matt Damon and everyone else involved made a fantastic part three in the series, one which simultaneously left things ambiguous and yet still closed off the series in an entirely satisfying and fitting way.

But you know that since the three films combined made a few dozen million under a whopping $1 billion worldwide (with the third one alone making over $400 million), that they are going to at least entertain the idea of doing another one (in fact, news came out last year that Universal had bought the complete rights to the Bourne character, as well as first look options on other Robert Ludlum books). With the ambiguous way Ultimatum ended, it has left the door open for them to go back to the series for another go at it.

It was already confirmed last year that another Bourne film was on the way, and that Damon and Greengrass would be returning (after them swearing left, right and center that there wouldn’t be another). But it’s always great to hear it from the horses mouth (so to speak), so via an interview with Parade Magazine Matt Damon confirmed that a Bourne 4 is definitely already being worked on:

Q: Is it official that you’ll return as Jason Bourne for a fourth time?

A: We’re working on it. This time it would be from an original script rather than a book by Robert Ludlum. But the director, Paul Greengrass, is busy and I am too, so we’ll see what happens.

Q: Are you ready to be Bourne again?

A: Listen, when I did the first movie, I was 29 years old. I am 37 now, and after a tough fighting scene, the next day you wake up and feel your body more. That’s just the way it is.

It seems that apart from both Damon and Greengrass working on other things, it’s the fact that Damon is a little bit older than he was when he first played the character back in 2002, that’s a point of concern for him. Clearly the man is in great shape as he showed in Ultimatum (among other films), but it’s true that when you get older, even if your mind is ready for a full day’s physical work, your body might not be.

When I saw The Bourne Ultimatum in the theater, I walked out wholly satisfied with the way they wrapped up the series, leaving you wanting more but at the same time happy that it was the end of the trilogy. But it’s been a couple of years since we saw Jason Bourne on the big screen and I must admit I am now all for a fourth film. There’ve been some good action films since Ultimatum’s release but Bourne always gave us action plus intelligence, and I think another film would not only make serious bank like the first three, but also would be a project welcomed by fans and critics alike.

Of course since this film wouldn’t be based on any of the books by Robert Ludlum (which the first three were), it might not turn out to be as good as the others. It’ll be interesting to see if they will try and replicate the spirit of the first three or if they’ll put an entirely different spin on it. I suspect a combination of the two.

So even though this isn’t an announcement saying Damon and Greengrass have everything worked out and that shooting is going to begin soon, it’s still some sort of confirmation that it is happening - and I’m very pleased.

Do you think there should be a Bourne 4? Or is it best left at just the three?

HUSH Movie Trailer

What would you do if you saw someone in trouble? Would you help, or turn the other way? In HUSH, a young couple, Zakes and Beth, are driving up a dark, rain-soaked M1, when they are abruptly cut off by a wildly-driven truck. For a brief moment, the back of the truck rolls open to reveal what looks like a distressed, half-naked woman, tied up and caged. Only half convinced of the reality of what he has seen, Zakes reports the incident to the police and then tries to put the whole thing out of his mind.

Shocked and angry at how unconcerned he is, Beth storms off when they pull in at a service station. When Zakes goes to look for her, shes nowhere to be found... but a familiar looking truck, driven by a mysterious hooded figure, is pulling out of the car park. Knowing in his gut that the unthinkable has happened and Beth has been kidnapped, Zakes chases after the truck and so begins a brutal game of cat-and-mouse on the motorway.

A tense and taut thriller, Hush keeps you on the edge of your seat while asking the uncomfortable question how far would you go to save someone you love?

The Boat That Rocked International Trailer 3 New!!

Release Date: August 28, 2009
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Richard Curtis
Screenwriter: Richard Curtis
Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Sturridge, Jack Davenport, Ralph Brown, Chris O'Dowd, January Jones
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Plot Summary: Inspired by the British pirate radio revolution in the '60s, the majority of the film's shoot will take place in a large rusty metal fishing trawler moored off the coast of England in the very waters that kept the rock of the '60s booming into the U.K.

In 1966 -- arguably British pop music's finest era -- the BBC played only two hours of rock and roll every week. But pirate radio blasted rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day. And 25 million people -- more than half the population of Britain -- listened to these pirates every single day.

"The Boat That Rocked" is an ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between the young people of the '60s and pop music. It's about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, preferred jazz.

Leading the cast are Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Count, a big, brash, American god of the airwaves; Bill Nighy as Quentin, the boss of Radio Rock -- a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea that's populated by an eclectic crew of rock and roll DJs; Rhys Ifans as Gavin, the greatest DJ in Britain who has just returned from his drug tour of America to reclaim his rightful position; Nick Frost as Dave, an ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny co-broadcaster; and Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Hamlet) as British Minister Dormandy, a fearsome government official out for blood against the drug takers and lawbreakers of a once-great nation.
